North Fayette and Oak Grove Win the Battle of the Books

Elementary students demonstrated their reading retention skills as they squared off against each other during the 2002 Fayette County Battle of the Books Celebration.

The celebration, which is open to all fourth and fifth graders in the county, is designed to inspire students to read and discuss books as a collective group. The fourth-grade winner of this year's Battle of the Books was North Fayette Elementary, with Oak Grove Elementary taking first place at the fifth-grade level.

"Our Battle of the Books Celebrations were outstanding this year. All teams were well-prepared and excited about participating in this event. We congratulate North Fayette and Oak Grove for a job well done," said Reading Coordinator Debbie Wheat. "This event demonstrates that we have many students who not only read well but read with passion. These students will never be alone in life because books are the truest of friends."

Fourth grades were required to read 22 titles from a list that boasts of such authors as Betsy Byars, Roald Dahl, Fayetteville's own Robert Burch and Laura Ingalls Wilder. Fifth grade students read 20 works from such authors as C.S. Lewis, Wilson Rawls and Barbara Robinson.

Prior to the county event, classrooms held competitions at each school to determine a grade-level winner to represent the school at the celebration. At the county level, three-member teams answered three rounds of questions about the books they had read. Students had to correctly identify the book and its author to receive a perfect score for each question.

At the end of each round, the top scoring students advanced to the next level. After the third round was completed, the winners were determined and all teams were celebrated and honored.
