Not simply for the birds! Michael Forsyth, 14, of Peachtree City, has been awarded the 2002 Ed Barnsley Scholarship from the Atlanta Audubon Society. Each year, the Society awards one scholarship to a youth in the metro Atlanta area to attend an Audubon camp in the coastal area of Maine. The week-long camp is located on Hog Island, Maine. Participants will help Puffin Project biologists count breeding gulls, tens and Atlantic puffins. Nationally-known ornithologists also will teach field identification tips, bird song recognition, and conservation practices. Michael has long been interested in birds. His interest was peaked as he studies ornithology for a Science Olympiad event in which he was participating. He is an eighth grader at J.C. Booth Middle School. His interests have also led him to bird photography. Michael was recently recognized as a national finalist in the River of Words Environmental Poetry and Art Contest. Thousands of entries from around the world were submitted and only 41 art finalists were chosen, 20 from other countries and 21 from the United States. Michael's photograph of a yellow warbler, taken during the January snowstorm in Peachtree City, won national finalist recognition.
