Marijuana suspect charged with attempting to run over undercover Fayette officer

A College Park man has been arrested after deputies say he attempted to run over an undercover agent who was trying to keep him from fleeing the scene of a drug bust.

Rodney Romel Jacobs, 24, tried to drive away from a sting last week at a convenience store in north Fayette County that involved an undercover officer purchasing one pound of marijuana, according to Lt. Charles McCollum of the Fayette County Sheriff's Department.

In his attempt to flee the scene, Jacobs put the car in reverse and rammed a police vehicle, McCollum said. Then, as Jacobs' car lurched forward in his attempt to escape, one undercover officer from the Fayette County Drug Task Force was directly in the car's path, McCollum said.

"The driver tried to drive off and an officer got in front of the car and hollered, "Police, Stop!" McCollum said.

The officer shot the vehicle's left front tire and others were able to block in the vehicle and pull Jacobs out to make the arrest, McCollum said.

"They had him boxed in and they took him out of the car and arrested him," McCollum said.

No one was injured during the incident, McCollum added.

Another College Park man, Tarik Jihad Childs, 22, was arrested after trying to flee the scene. He was chased on foot and apprehended by officers, McCollum said.

The money used to make the transaction was also recovered, McCollum added.

Jacobs is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of ecstasy and selling marijuana, all felonies. Childs is charged with selling marijuana and obstruction of a police officer. Both men also face misdemeanor counts of possession of less than one ounce of marijuana.
