School system names new personnel director

Chris Scott, principal of Eastside Elementary School, will take the position of Director of Personnel for the Coweta County School System during the 2003-2003 school year.

Scott replaces current Director Mark Guy, who is leaving the post to become principal of Arnall Middle School for the new school year. Guy replaces Arnall principal Charles Smith, who will become the principal of the new elementary school on Willis Road, which opens August, 2002. Scott has served as Eastside Elementary principal for two years.

Scott said he looks forward to beginning the director's job in July.

"I'm ecstatic about it because it gives me an opportunity to seek top-notch, qualified teachers and support personnel for the Coweta County School System," he said.

"It's sad for me to leave Eastside, but it's right in line with the mission I had in coming to education in the first place."

"I entered into education for the express purpose of having an impact on students' lives and making a difference, and this is another step in that direction. As a teacher I had an impact on my class; as a principal I had an impact on my school; and now I have the opportunity to have an impact on the whole county through recruitment and the process of attracting quality personnel to our county schools."

Scott speaks highly of Eastside faculty, students and parents.

"It's a fantastic school and a great community, with very supportive parents. Eastside is truly a community school, and I couldn't have asked for a better staff - they are seasoned and very strong educators."

Scott also comes to the position as personnel issues remain crucial for the county school system because of continued growth in the community and student population.

"We need a great numbers of teachers at a time when teachers are increasingly hard to get, and that means we'll need to think outside the box. We can't just recruit for brand new teachers coming out of college, but also people from other professions from outside of the classroom, and that's why programs like TAPP are so important."

Scott's replacement as Principal has not been named. Superintendent Peggy Connell announced that a teachers and parents committee is being convened to review applicants for Scott's position.

The committee will be made up of Assistant Principal Nancy Tinsely, parent representative Cheri Babb, one to two community representatives, an Eastside teachers' representative and one to two staff representatives.

Dr. Connell said she has used the "team interviewing" concept for hiring new Principals successfully in the past.

"It's a good process to allow input from the community and staff," said Dr. Connell.

Connell also noted that Scott has had a distinguished career in Coweta County following a career in the military, where he served as a recruiter among other duties.

"Chris has had variety of professional experiences. His previous career and his educational experiences make him an exceptional candidate for Personnel Director," she said.
