Rising Starr Sweeps Regional Academic Bowl Competition

The academic bowl team at Rising Starr Middle School brought home two first-place trophies from the recent RESA (Regional Educational Service Agency) Academic Bowl competition.

The school's team placed first in both the win/loss and points categories. A total of 20 schools participated in the regional competition. Trophies were given to the first and second place winners who had the most wins and the teams with the most points from the 2001-2002 school year.

Teams compete about once a month from October to February. Team members are selected at the beginning of the academic year through tryouts comprised of written and oral tests. During competitions, students answer questions pertaining to various subject areas such as history, English, science and math. Matches are made up of three rounds with three different schools competing. A total of 20 questions are asked with a time limit of 10 seconds to answer the first part of a question and 30 seconds for the second half.

One the team's coaches, Ophelia Mustain, said good competitors are not only very bright but can also think fast on their feet to retrieve information.

"Many times students with the best grades who are diligent workers are not the best academic bowl competitors. Being quick is essential to having a successful team," she added. "I have enjoyed working with this year's team and watching them develop throughout the year. The competitions are tough and we are very proud of our students' accomplishments."
