Fayette girl shines in concert

Ashley Berry is no stranger to singing gospel music, but last week she found herself in some elite company.

The 9-year-old Fayetteville resident had the opportunity to sing on stage during noted Christian music performer Amy Grant's concert at First Baptist Church in Jonesboro. Not only that, but her rendition of "Amazing Grace" was accompanied on the guitar by country music star Vince Gill, Grant's husband.

Not bad, considering it was the first time Ashley ever even attended a concert.

Part of her good fortune was likely due to the fact that her family sat on the front row, according to Aimee Berry, Ashley's mother.

"Amy was taking song requests and I requested 'Amazing Grace,'" said Aimee. "Amy asked if I wanted to help her sing and I said my daughter would. Amy said, 'Get her up here.'"

Gill and Grant played guitar while Ashley did two solo verses of "Amazing Grace."

"Amy said later in the concert that looking into her husband's eyes over my daughter's beautiful blonde head while having her sing one of her favorite songs would be something she would never forget," Aimee recalled.

Ashley is such a fan of Grant's music that she is known as "Amy Jr." at home, her mother said, and she wants to be a "famous Christian singer" when she grows up. To that end, she is already studying voice and plans to cut a demo CD this summer.
