New weather alarm siren planned to reach shoppers at Fayette Pavilion

Now that most of the county's manufactured home parks are covered, Fayette County emergency officials want to put a severe weather alert siren near the Fayette Pavilion.

The best choice for a location is on property on Ellis Road where the county is building a new water tank, said Capt. Pete Nelms of the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

The siren, which broadcasts an audible signal in a 360-degree format, has a range of about 5,000 feet, Nelms told the county's Water Committee as he asked permission to put the siren at the Ellis Road location.

The committee unanimously agreed to recommend allowing the siren there to the county board of commissioners.

"Our main focus is targeting the people at the Pavilion," Nelms said.

Committee chairman Chuck Watkins asked Nelms to look into using a metal pole as opposed to the wooden "telephone" pole currently used for mounting the sirens.
