Verizon seeking old cell phones for a good cause

Area residents with surplus cell phones can use them to support a charitable cause this week.

In celebration of its one-year anniversary, the Fayetteville Verizon Wireless store is giving $500 to the Fayetteville Women's Shelter in support of Hopeline, an initiative by Verizon Wireless to encourage wireless customers to donate their no-longer-used wireless phones to help domestic violence victims.

Aditionally, $10 will be given to the Fayetteville Women's Shelter for every phone that is brought in during the anniversary celebrations.

From May 26-31, wireless customers in the Fayetteville area are invited to visit the communications store, located at 105 Promenade Parkway, Suite 105C, to take advantage of a variety of aniversary promotions, including a free phone drawing, buy one get one free phone promotions, and a week-long customer food-and-drink reception in the store.

"We are pleased that is has been such a remarkable year for VerizonWireless here in Fayetteville. In recognition of that success, we would like to invite everyone to celebrate this anniversary with us, and we encourage all wireless customers, regardless of their service provider, to come into our store this week to donate their no-longer used phones," said Laura Mansour, manager of the Verizon Wireless Store in Fayetteville.

The Fayetteville location offers the complete range of Verizon Wireless products including wireless voice services, messaging and wireless data.

Through the HopeLine Program, Verizon Wireless collects phones, in any condition, to benefit domestic volence survivors across the country. The phones are refurbished and distributed to domestic violence victims through local human services and law enforcement agencies. The recycled phones enable victims to access emergency services with enhanced 911 capabilities or to reach family, friends and employers while they are in temporary housing where they may not have access to a direct phone line.

The donated phones also can be sold to resellers and proceeds are used to purchase new wireless handsets for victims of domestic violence or the proceeds go to non-profit domestic violence advocacy organizations.

Last year, Verizon Wireless donated more than 4,000 phones and airtime and over $350,000 in monetary contributions nationally.

Verizon Wireless is the nation's largest wireless communications provider.
