Fayette students ready for state geography bee What state capital did the Puget Sound earthquake rock in the spring of 2001? Four Fayette County students who competed in the Georgia Geographic Bee would know that the answer is Olympia. Larisa Ruckl (fifth grade, Tyrone Elementary), J.T. Piribek (eighth grade, J.C. Booth Middle), Austin Garrett (eighth grade, Flat Rock Middle) and Daniel Hicks (eighth grade, Rising Starr Middle) were among 100 students in Georgia whose extensive knowledge of geography earned them an opportunity to compete in the state's bee, which was sponsored by the National Geographic Society. Selection for the state bee began with students in all of the county's elementary, middle and high schools taking tests in the classrooms to determine who would participate in each school's individual bee. Students who won at the school level took a written test and the top 100 students in Georgia were selected to participate in the state competition in April at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville.
