Local student wins state oratorical contest
Andrea Zonnevald, representing the Evening Optimist Club of Fayetteville, won first prize in the Georgia District-Optimist International Oratorical Contest. She is the daughter of Diederik and Carla Zonneveld of Fayetteville and is completing her sophomore year at Starr's Mill High School. To win this competition, Andrea composed a speech on the subject of "If I Could Change The World." It had to be 4-5 minutes in duration. After winning in local club, zone, and area competitions, she took top honors at the Georgia District Conference May 5 and now has a scholarship to help with her college expenses. The Optimist International Oratorical Contest has been a prominent part of Optimist clubs' service to youth since 1928. It occurs every year beginning in February. Any Georgia high school student is eligible to compete in next year's contest if he or she has not reached 16 years of age as of Jan. 1, 2003. However, there is no minimum age to participate, so elementary and middle school students are also welcome. Any student interested in taking part in the contest can contact Joe Lundell at 678-289-8124 or Tom Roberts at 770-964-0070. The topic for 2003 will be released after Nov. 1.
