Holiday campaign to crack down on seat belt violators

The Georgia Department of Motor Vehicle Safety predicts 20 people will die in motor vehicle related crashes during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

And statewide, police agencies are gearing up to crack down on motorists violating Georgia's seat belt law during the holiday.

The "Click It or Ticket" campaign features police using checkpoints to stop and ticket drivers who violate seat belt and child safety seat laws. Police will also be on the lookout for motorists under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Non and part-time seat belt users will be targeted by the campaign in addition to teenage drivers, said Yvonne L. McBride, the director of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety.

"Our teens and young adults are dying at far higher rates in crashes due to inexperience, risk taking and low seat belt use," McBride said. "More that half of all teens who die in crashes are completely unrestrained. We can save lives because these tragedies are predictable and therefore preventable with proven techniques like high visibility enforcement mobilizations."

During last year's Click It or Ticket campaign, over 33,000 people were cited for seat belt violations while almost 2,200 were cited for violations of the child restraint law. Another 1,720 people were arrested for DUI as a result of the checkpoints.
