Travis foundation sees first graduate
By CAROLYN
CARY
Fayette County native and longtime business owner Ed Travis set up a foundation to assist graduates of his alma mater, Fayette County High School, and he has now seen the first of those students graduate from college. The Edward N. Travis Scholarship Foundation, Inc., was established in 1991 and its sixth student is about to enter Mercer University. The first college graduate from the program, Mark Prince, was reared in Fayette County and graduated from Fayette County High in 1997 in the top 5 percent of his class. In high school, Prince sang in the chorus and a school quartet, and was a member of the Beta Club and National Honor Society. He was the Spanish Student of the Year in 1995 and 1996. A lifelong member of Harps Crossing Baptist Church, he can still be found there each Sunday morning playing the keyboard. Upon graduation from high school, he received a Governors Scholarship as well as a scholarship from the Homebuilders Association of Midwest Georgia. His major at Georgia Tech was industrial and systems engineering. He earned expense money in the summer by working at Eckerd and Fayette Community Hospital. This summer he is completing two lab courses in organic chemistry so he can apply for medical school. His top choices are Emory Medical College and the Medical College of Georgia. He is hoping for a medical degree in anesthesiology, radiology or pediatric oncology. Jane Prince, Mark's mother, recently held a graduation reception for him, with family and church friends on hand, as well as Ed and Shelby Travis. Mark gave them a Georgia Tech Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of himself and the school.
