Rec dept. hosts history-filled tour
A van filled with 14 interested history buffs departed from the Hollingsworth House recently for the Fayette County Recreation Department's annual historical bus tour. The group toured inside the oldest courthouse building in Georgia, which is now the home of the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce and the Fayette County Development Authority. County historian Carolyn Cary met them at the Fayette County Historical Society where they learned about the Creek Indians and the early history of the county. The tour continued through Heritage Park and the Fayetteville City Cemetery, the Kenwood community, and on to Tyrone, where the group enjoyed a box lunch and learned about that town's history. After pausing in Peachtree City to learn about its history, they stopped at Starr's Mill, hearing about its life since the 1820s, then visited the May-Peeples-Paillor house before driving through Brooks and Woolsey back to Fayetteville. The group arrived back at its starting point six hours later and a lot more knowledgeable about the county's history.
