South Fulton Medical honors employees

Take away the equipment and the building, and a hospital is really just a group of people who have come together to care for others.

In addition to doctors and nurses, there are many others who are critical to the success of a hospital orderlies, technicians, maintenance people, administrators and others. This week, residents of our community are being asked to give all health care workers a special expression of gratitude.

South Fulton Medical Center is paying special thanks to health care workers with a tribute themed "It Had to Be You," highlighting the essential role health care workers play in serving the community. The tribute is part of a celebration of National Hospital and Healthcare Week, held May 12-18.

The public at large is being asked to join in the expression of gratitude by making the effort to say "thank you" to people they know who work in the health care field.

"Most people, who work in the health care arena, are motivated by compassion not money" said Dr. Andrew Agwunobi, CEO of South Fulton Medical Center. "They are a special group of workers, who go above and beyond to make the 'total health care experience' convenient, pleasurable and effective for members of our families and communities. We all owe them a debt of gratitude and should take every opportunity to pat them on the back and say a heartfelt 'thank you' for all they do. That's the idea behind our tribute's 'It Had To Be You' theme."

As part of the celebration, South Fulton Medical Center and the Tenet Healthcare Foundation have honored an outstanding employee at by donating $500 to a charity of the employee's choice. This year's recognition goes to James Spease, transporter in the Radiology Department whose charity of choice is the American Diabetes Association.

"We are incredibly grateful to have James at our hospital," said Dr. Agwunobi. "His dedication to our patients, the community and to his fellow employees is an inspiration for us all. His constant outstanding demonstration of kindness and compassion sets the standard for customer service."

"We're honored to accept this donation from Mr. Spease and South Fulton Medical Center said Carol Holmes, spokesperson for the American Diabetes Association's Atlanta office. "Health care workers do so much for our community. We're pleased to be a part of the celebration that recognizes their hard work and dedication."

The donation is part of nationwide effort by South Fulton Medical Center's parent company.

The Tenet Healthcare Foundation will donate nearly $55,000 to 124 charities across the company in honor of National Hospital and Healthcare Week.

Over the past five years, the foundation has donated more than $20 million to thousands of charitable organizations in communities served by Tenet.

From simple acts of kindness to being present during the most important and delicate aspects of people's lives, health care worker perform deeds from the mundane to the heroic sometimes without anyone noticing. National Hospital and Healthcare Week is a time when people in our community are being asked to give recognition to group who doesn't ask for it, yet performs an important community service.

National Hospital and Healthcare Week comes on the heels of National Nurses Week, which is held May 6-12. For information, contact Billy Mitchell at 404-305-4509.
