Ill-timed rain forces shutdown of All Children's Playground

Hampered by rain at the wrong time, the Luther Holt Memorial All Children's Playground in Peachtree City remains closed to the public.

The rain kept crews from installing the rubberized surface that allows for easy wheelchair access to the equipment. Volunteer workers installed the second phase of playground equipment, which is about one foot higher than the first. But the rain came several days later, forcing the surfacing project to be postponed.

The two sections are connected by a bridge, which forces the playground to be closed until crews can get back to Peachtree City to install the surface.

The area must be dry and compacted before the surfacing can be installed, said Randy Gaddo, director of leisure services for Peachtree City.

It is not clear when a crew can return to install the surfacing, Gaddo said, although hopes are the playground can reopen by the end of June.

The playground was designed so any child, even those using wheelchairs and walkers, could use it.

Funds for the playground were raised by the community. The first two phases cost $100,000, and a third phase that will include swings and a tot lot for very young children will cost $100,000.

Holt was a big supporter of the playground initiative before his death.

To donate funds for the effort, call the Peachtree City Recreation Department at 770-631-2542.
