Parking space cuts urged for bank, ice cream parlor in PTC

Reducing parking spaces at two new developments was a significant concern of the Peachtree City Planning Commission at its regular meeting Monday night.

The commission asked officials of Southern Community Bank and Bruster's Ice Cream to look at reducing their overall parking spaces. Since Bruster's will be located in the Lexington Circle commercial area off Ga. Highway 54 and Walt Banks Road, the commission asked it to seek a parking easement from the adjacent store, CVS Pharmacy.

The Bruster's conceptual plan, which was unanimously approved by the commission, includes 42 parking spaces for the ice cream parlor, which is just 988 square feet but only offers outdoor seating.

A Bruster's representative said the spaces are necessary to handle crowds during the 7-10 p.m. period when it does most of its business.

Parking was a similar concern for the Southern Community Bank project, which has 40 parking spaces planned for its site off Aberdeen Parkway between Hwy. 74 and Commerce Drive.

Commissioners were told that part of the bank's needs were based on vehicles that pull trailers and take up several spaces at a time. Another consideration is that larger passenger vehicles like SUVs can take up two spaces at a time.

Commissioner Robert Ames suggested instead deleting 11 spaces along Aberdeen Parkway and redesigning that area into a parking area for vehicles with trailers.

If the bank's business grows, it can come back and ask for more parking spots in the future, noted commissioner Rich Schumacher.

"It's a nice looking building," Schumacher said.
