Youngsters can fly high this weekend

Coweta County area young people ages 8-17 will have a chance to take to the skies Saturday as the Georgia Sport Aviation EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) Chapter 6 hosts a Young Eagles Flight Rally at the Coweta County/Newnan Airport.

The rally is part of the EAA Aviation Foundation's Young Eagles Program, created to get more young people interested in aviation.

Volunteer EAA pilots have a goal to provide one million young people an airplane ride by the year 2003 - the 100th anniversary of powered flight and the 50th anniversary of EAA, the world's largest sport aviation organization.

"Free airplane rides are just part of the Flight Rally," said Ed Roberts, spokesman for the event. "We hope to build one-to-one relationships between pilots and young people, giving a new generation a chance to leam more about the possibilities that exist in the world of aviation."

Pilots and the event will also explain more about their airplanes allowing young people to discover how airplanes work and how pilots ensure asafety as the prim concern before every flight.

Following the flight, each young person will receive a certificate making them an official Young Eagle. Their name will then be entered into the "World's Largest Logbook," which is on permanent display at the EAA Air Adventure Museum in Oshkosh, Wis.

The logbook is also accessible on the Internet at www.youngeagles.com.

Other activities scheduled for the rally include display aircraft and a pancake breakfast.

Along with flight rallies, EAA members are also flying Young Eagles on an individual basis around the world. Young Eagles have already been registered in more than 70 countries.

Young people and their parents attending the flight rally May 18 are asked to come to Coweta County/Newnan Airport, starting at 8:30 a.m. to register for their flight. Flights will begin at 8:45 a.m., with registration closing time at noon. A pancake breakfast will be served for a $3 donation.

Additional information about EAA, the EAA Aviation Foundation and Young Eagles, is available on the World Wide Web at www.eaa.org.
