Central students show-off job skills Five students at the Central Educational Center won first place in the state-level SkillsUSA competition, and will represent Georgia and Coweta County at the national SkillsUSA-VICA competition in Kansas City. Fourteen CEC students in all competed in the contest. The first-place state winners and their base high schools are: Mandy Throgmorton, Job Interview, East Coweta; Dominick Ravo, Culinary Arts,Northgate; Rich Biggins, Electronics Technology, East Coweta; Kyle Libbey, 3D Visualization and Animation East Coweta; and Nathan Smith, 3D Visualization and Animation, East Coweta. Libbey and Smith competed as a team against other students, and were tasked with creating a video commercial using 3D computer animation within a three-hour period. Their project, as with other SkillsUSA contests, approximated real-world tasks that require a demonstration of high-level skills. This was CEC's first statewide competition. "To have first place in four contests speaks highly of our instructors and advisers," said Mark Whitlock, CEO of the Central Educational Center. The contest was held April 24-25, partly in Gwinnett County at Gwinnett Technical College and at Maxwell High School and partly in Coweta County, at the Central Educational Center. CEC hosted Computer Maintenance Technology, Graphic Design, and Computer Networking competitions. All five CEC "team members" will represent Georgia in Kansas City's largest annual convention--the U.S. finals of the SkillsUSA competition. Nearly $20 million of corporate support is utilized to develop the one week convention and competition. Winners in Kansas City will represent the U.S. in international competition in St. Gallen, Switzerland. Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce President Greg Wright is spearheading a community-wide effort to raise funding through the Coweta Community Foundation to send the students to Kansas City. Anyone interested in sponsorship can call Wright at 770-253-2270.
