Burch Students Beat the Street in Stock Market Game Despite the events of Sept. 11 that left a dismal mark on Wall Street, fifth-grade enrichment students at Robert J. Burch Elementary used their keen investment skills to win at the Stock Market Game. Students in Katy Linteris' class were this year's state winners in the elementary division of the game, finishing with a team portfolio of $143,147. Team members were Blair Hubbert, Katie Harper, Stacey Galli, Tracy Killingsworth and Chandler Countryman. Developed by the Georgia Council on Economic Education, the Stock Market Game is a simulation of Wall Street trading that provides a framework for teaching students about the American economic system. For 10 weeks, students invest a hypothetical $100,000 in common stocks on the New York and American Stock Exchanges and the NASDAQ Stock Market. Students at Burch achieved their winning portfolio by working together to research their stock selections. The team submitted their transactions and received weekly portfolios highlighting their current holdings, brokerage commissions, margin fees and team ranking. The team was honored at a special awards luncheon held at the Depot in Atlanta May 7.
