Elementary Students Demonstrate Math Skills at County Competition

Fayette's best fourth- and fifth-grade mathematicians showcased their calculation skills during the second annual Fayette County Elementary Math Tournament.

Teams of three students from each elementary school worked against the clock to solve different types of word problems covering various mathematic areas such as geometry, algebra and measurement. Students on each school's team collaborated with each other to determine the calculations.

All elementary schools hosted individual competitions to determine the three-person teams that would represent each school at the county tournament. Teams placing first at the school level were given the opportunity to vie for the county championship. The competition was designed to recognize the skills and accomplishments of each school team.

"All of these students are already winners representing their schools and should be very proud of their accomplishments. We are very proud of them," Kay Seabolt, math coordinator, told students and parents at the competition.

Winners of the fifth-grade tournament were Jad Sheikali, Ken Jackson (alternate) and Patrick Kelly of Kedron in first place; Andrew Barth, Amy Bonecutter, David Emmel and Mike Firowcz (alternate) of Oak Grove in second place; and Robbie Grubbs, Patrick McLaughlin (alternate), Michael Mask and Taylor Dickson of Brooks in third place.

Fourth-grade winners were Tiffany Liao (alternate), Cal Wheeler, Nick Marette and Graham Risch of Kedron in first place; Casey Sullivan, Matine Van Voorthuysen, Shelby Coffee (alternate) and Sean Curtis of Peachtree City in second place; and Omoye Osehoba, Paige Boyer, Laura Brunks and Doug Horgen (alternate) of Spring Hill in third place.

Each participant received a certificate of participation and the first-, second- and third-place teams in both grade levels were awarded a trophy to take back to their school to commemorate their accomplishment. Additionally, the first-place team from each grade level had its school name engraved on the plaque of champions that is displayed in Seabolt's office at the LaFayette Educational Center.
