VOCA students finish strong at state championship Students from Fayette County High School made a lasting impact on judges at the Georgia State VOCA (Vocational Opportunities Chapters of America) conference as they walked away with some of the top awards in the state. Adrian Crowder was named the state's champion as the "Most Improved Young Lady." In other vocational areas, Octavius Price finished third in floral design and Craig Hazard took eighth place in culinary arts. Approximately 16 students competed against each other in the various vocational areas at the state championship. As part of the competition, students were required to create a presentation for their particular vocational area including samples of their work. Judges individually interviewed the contestants, asking questions pertaining to the project itself such as educational requirements, pay, possible job sites and trends. Students also had to successfully express goal setting and future plans for their chosen vocation. "Students can have a great project, but they will not place well if they have a poor interview. A complete knowledge of a competitor's area of expertise is essential," said Richard Penland, VOCA sponsor at FCHS. The top six students in each category were recognized and presented awards during the competition. "The atmosphere at the championship is unlike any that these kids have every experienced and may never again. Certainly, this is the biggest point of the year in VOCA," added Penland.
