Donation Helps Students Reach for the Stars

Stargazers at Starr's Mill High School will be able to clearly see various planets and stars in the universe thanks to a generous donation from the Fayetteville Wal-Mart store.

Wal-Mart has donated a Meade DS-2060 ATE 2.4-foot refractor telescope to the school which will allow students to easily see Saturn, the red spot of Jupiter, galaxies, nebulae and stars to the magnitude of 11.0. It is also equipped with a computerized star finder to automatically find objects in the sky and it can be linked to a video camera or television monitor.

Dan Gant, science department chairman, and Dr. Steve Clark, advanced placement physics teacher, were presented the telescope by Wal-Mart representative Michael Wagnon April 13. Clark describes the telescope as an "excellent scope for beginning astronomers."

The school's science department will primarily use the telescope but it will also be available for all teachers to use.
