Fayette's counselors honored at celebration

Counselors of the year for 2001-2002 were named during the Fayette School Counselors Association's (FSCA) second annual installation of officers and awards reception at St. Andrews in the Pines in Peachtree City.

Each year, the association selects one counselor for the title of counselor of the year at the elementary, middle and high school level as well as gives an advocate of the year award to a person who has significantly contributed to the support of all Fayette counselors.

"We have an organization where every counselor here could be named counselor of the year. We are here today to celebrate our accomplishments and to thank those who have worked hard to support us," said outgoing FSCA President Susan Earwood just before the presentation of awards.

Winners of this year's counselor of the year awards are Billie Anderson, Braelinn Elementary; Sandy Perrin, J.C. Booth Middle; and Nancy Wortmann, McIntosh High.

The advocate of the year award was given to Larry Reeves, director of pupil personnel services. Throughout the year, Reeves works with counselors on many different levels to help them get the resources they need to effectively do their jobs. Earlier this year, he helped the elementary counselors secure funding so that they could attend the Georgia School Counselors Association and make their first presentation on effective guidance practices which turned out to be one of the most attend seminars at the conference.

"He trusts us as professionals and give us resources to do our jobs. He has always encouraged our professional growth as well as encouraged us to be leaders of other counselors. He is a man of integrity and he treats everyone equally and fairly. We will miss him as our greatest cheerleader," said Nancy Sheets, counselor at Hood Avenue Primary, about Reeves, who is retiring at the end of the academic year.

In addition to honoring those who have greatly contributed to the school counseling profession, the association also installed its new slate of officers for 2002-2003. The officers are Billie Anderson, Braelinn Elementary, president; Jo Ann Swafford, Fayette Middle, president elect; Susan Earwood, Whitewater Middle, past president; Nancy Sheets, Hood Avenue Primary, elementary worksetting vice president; Sandy Perrin, J.C. Booth Middle, middle school worksetting vice president; Judy Rogers, Starr's Mill High, high school worksetting vice president; Janice McLeroy, Rising Starr Middle, secretary; and Amor Kok, exceptional children, treasurer.

The FSCA was started in 1999 in order to provide a professional forum to discuss issues facing today's counselors. Approximately 78 percent of Fayette's counselors are members of the association.
