Fayette students dominate art contest

Fayette County students took the top three places in U.S. Rep. Mac Collins' annual Congressional Art Contest, and the top two spots share a unique connection.

Hillary Mickleboro of Sandy Creek High School took first place for her drawing, "Layered in a Dusty Garage." Dorrie Fletcher is Hillary's art teacher.

In second place was Katie Holcombe of Fayette County High School for her mixed media entry, "Hope for the Nation." Katie's art teacher is Melanie Mickleboro, Hillary's mother.

3rd Place: Beth Jenkins, McIntosh came in third with her drawing, "Leaves and Berries." Gretchen McCance is Beth's art teacher.

In all, 27 students were selected by their schools to compete district-wide. Artists Diane Osborne and Geri Davis of Columbus served as judges.

The annual competition is held in congressional districts around the country and is an excellent opportunity for members of Congress to showcase the talent of the creative high school students in their districts. Since its inception in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated in approximately 5,000 local contests.

The first-place winner in each district will have his or her artwork displayed for a year in the walkway which leads from the U.S. Capitol to the Cannon House Office Building.

This year's winning student will be invited to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony June 25 in Washington, D.C. Photos of the winners with Rep. Collins will be displayed on Collins' Web site at www.house.gov/maccollins.
