Jamie Gilman could pick up his tux Tuesday morning knowing full well that he'd get to show it off Saturday night.

The Fayette County High School junior will attend prom Saturday after all, since a disciplinary tribunal decided not to punish him further for accidentally bringing a machete on campus.

Gilman's 10-day suspension ended today when he was scheduled to go back to school, said his father, Frank.

"He was thrilled to death about it," Frank Gilman said of the tribunal's decision Monday afternoon. He noted that his son had a lot of support from his friends and fellow students.

When the weapon was discovered in the back of his pickup in the school parking lot two weeks ago, Jamie Gilman told school officials he accidentally left it there. He used the tool as a part of the landscaping business he started with a friend while taking a landscaping class at FCHS.

Jamie's mother, Terri Gilman, wanted to thank the Board of Education, FCHS Principal Dr. Charles Warr and the teachers and parents who supported him through the ordeal.

But Frank Gilman said he thought the tribunal's decision was influenced by the media coverage of the case.

Now the Gilmans' thoughts turn to prom and later the outcome of Jamie Gilman's criminal case. He is charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds, but hopes are that the charge will be dropped, Frank Gilman said.
