RVI Expo prepares vocational students for state competition

Vocational students from the county's four high schools showcased their talents at Fayette's first annual Related Vocational Instruction (RVI) Expo.

Approximately 17 students participated in the county event, which gave them an opportunity to practice their presentation and demonstration skills prior to attending the state RVI competition on St. Simons Island at the end of April. Among the vocational areas on display included auto technology, cosmetology, graphic arts, job interview skills, school, community, construction and transportation.

Although the expo was not a competition, judges rated each project and provided feedback to students so that they could prefect their presentations before the state event. Students were rated on the appearance of their project, the learning value, oral interview with the judges and proper documentation complete with pictures, rough plans, designs and an explanation of the student's work.

"We are here today to commend you for your hard work and competitive spirit. From what I have seen today, I know that we are going to perform well at the state level," said Nancy Wise, RVI teacher at Fayette County High School.

The RVI competition allows students who have disabilities the opportunity to compete academically in a vocational area. The competition is open to all RVI students at the county's four high schools.

"Most of these students have never had an opportunity like this before. They get a tremendous sense of pride and accomplishment, sometimes for the first time their lives," said Linda Williams, RVI teacher at Starr's Mill High School.

Williams adds that participation in the competition is important because it give students an arena to research, learn and present information about a career that is of interest to them.

"This gives them focus and direction. In my opinion, this competition is one of the most valuable experiences our students participate in during their entire high school career," she explained.

Each student who participated in the Fayette RVI Expo received a certificate of participation and two coupons for a free Chick-fil-A sandwich.
