Fifth-graders score high in math contest

Students at Braelinn and Kedron Elementary Schools have once again proven that they excel at math by placing first and second in the region, respectively, in the annual MathFax Competition.

MathFax is an online math contest that allows students to compete against each other both regionally and nationally. The competition is composed of four tests, 25 questions each, which students take throughout the year.

Fifth-grade enrichment students at both schools were enrolled in the honors portion of the competition, which consists of tests with more difficult questions. Braelinn ended up with a total overall score of 280, just 18 points ahead of Kedron's second place finish. A total of 10 schools competed in the regional contest.

Nationally, both schools performed well with Braelinn finishing fourth and Kedron taking 12th place. There were 90 schools competing across the nation.

The top finishing individual students at Braelinn were Ryan O'Shaughnessy, who placed fourth nationally and first in the region; Shota Oba and Michael Houck, tied for fourth in the region; Celia Sullivan, fifth; Mark Trinquero and Brein Millea, tied for sixth; and Fumika Shimada, ninth in the region.

Kedron's top regional finishers were Lauren Cash, third place; Patrick Kelly, 10th; and Will Kearney, Taylor Womack and Joey Tesorieri, who tied for 13th place.

MathFax awards certificates to the top three students who place nationally as well as the top four in each division. The top student in each division receives a trophy and the top school is awarded a plaque.

Approximately 1,300 schools across the nation compete in MathFax. The purpose of the competition is to sharpen the participating students test taking math skills that are needed to do well on college entrance exams.
