June 1 deadline for homestead exemptions

Residents have until June 1 for filing for homestead and special exemptions. If you are a new homeowner or qualify for special exemptions due to age or disability, you should call or go to the Fayette County Tax Commissioner's office before the deadline.

To qualify for homestead exemption, the resident must live on the property before Jan. 1 of the year of application. Bring a copy of the warranty deed or settlement statement from your closing to Suite 110 at the Stonewall Village Government Complex.

Special exemptions can start at age 62 for residents. If you're 62 on Jan. 1 of the year of application, you can receive an additional $2,000 off the assessed value of your home when the tax is calculated. This is an average $40 savings on your taxes.

To qualify for the 50 percent school exemption, the property owners must reside on the property and have reached at age 65 on or before Jan. 1 of the year of application.

To qualify for 100 percent school exemption, the property owner must reside on the property and reached age 65 on or before Jan. 1 of the year of application. You must show evidence that Georgia taxable income is less than $15,000.

Certain disable persons may also qualify for either a 50 percent or 100 percent exemption. In lieu of age 65, a person who is totally and permanently disabled will be required to provide required documentation. For more information, contact the Tax Commissioner's office at 770-461-3652.
