Old library building coming down

A small controversy erupted last week during the Fayette County Commission meeting over the use of a metal building that used to house the Fayette County Library. The building is near the site of the county's new jail under construction and is slated to be torn down. But Commissioner A.G. VanLandingham suggested the county reconsider its actions since there were folks in the county who said they could use the facility. "It would cost $500,000 to replace it," he said. But Commission Chairman Greg Dunn disagreed and said the pre-form metal building was in bad shape and in constant need of roof repairs. Dunn added the county had pledged to remove the building and replace it with a berm to make the site more attractive. Commissioner Linda Wells agreed with Dunn. "I have a problem with going back. That's what we promised the citizens," she said. Dunn also said it would be extremely costly for the county to move the more than 22 million tons of dirt near the building. VanLandingham said the county's emergency services department was looking for space and could possibly use the building, but department head Jack Krakeel said the building would have to be totally reconfigured for his department's use. In the end, VanLandingham agreed to let the building be torn down and the landscaped berm put in its place.
