PE Educator Receives State Honors
Physical education is every student's stepping stone to life-long health and fitness and no one knows that better than Heather Allen of Kedron Elementary.

Allen, who has been a physical education teacher for eight years, was nominated by her peers for Georgia Teacher of the Year for Elementary PE, a honor given by the Georgia Association for health, physical education, recreation and dance. Allen was this year's third-place recipient for the award that was handed out at the association's annual convention at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain.

"I was so excited and honored to come away with the third place award. I was very surprised to learn that I had placed," said Allen.

In addition to being nominated for teacher of the year, Allen was also elected to serve as chair-elect of elementary physical education for the state and will automatically become chairman next year. Her duties will include planning the association's annual conventions, working with the teacher of the year committee and keeping up with state mandated changes in elementary physical education.

"I wanted to run for this office because I wanted to be more involved in what is going on in the state regarding PE. I also want to help keep my fellow teachers in the county abreast of changes that might be on the horizon," she says.

Allen has taught physical education at Kedron since 1999.
