Hung honored by UGA for research

Dr. Yen-Cong Hung of Peachtree City was awarded the Creative Research Medal by the University of Georgia at the 23rd Annual Research Awards Banquet April 3 at the Athens Classic Center.

Hung has been a professor of food science and technology with UGA's College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Griffin Campus for 16 years.

He received the Creative Research Medal for developing a process using electrolyzed oxidized water (EO water), which destroys harmful bacteria and preserves nutrients which may be destroyed by heat. EO water also eliminates excess chemicals in wastewater treatment. This is an alternative to the use of chemical and heat treatments in protecting our food supply.

In the past, Hung has received the1995 New Holland Young Researcher Award from the American Society of Agricultural Engineers, the 1998 UGA Gamma Sigma Delta Senior Faculty Award and the 1999 Professional Achievement Award from the Chinese American Food Society.
