Paving issue proves perplexing By JOHN
THOMPSON
To pave Quarters Road or not that is the question confronting the Fayette County Commission. For the second time in the last few months, Dan Hudson asked the board to pave the portion between High Grove and Alexander Ware Way. Hudson explained all the property owners on that portion of the road wanted it paved because of the dust levels of the road and also safety concerns. "It's not getting any better. The traffic is increasing daily," he said. While some of the commissioners sympathized with Hudson's problem, Commissioner Linda Wells had issues with Hudson's request. "I have a problem with people who move to a nuisance. I'm afraid we're creating a hazard by just paving that part,' she said. But Commissioner Herb Frady disagreed, and said it was the county's responsibility. "This board is responsible for improving roads. I know there are a lot of people who don't want that road paved, but it's becoming dangerous,' he said. Commissioner A.G. VanLandingham also didn't believe the problem could be solved by paving just a portion of the road. While Commission Chairman Greg Dunn's preference would be to pave the entire road, he said the county had to be careful. "I don't want to do it if all the residents don't want it," he said. The county staff was instructed to do a survey of the road to find the exact center and right of way. Public works director Lee Hearn said if the entire road was paved, thousands of trees would have to be cut down. "I really don't want to lose those specimen trees out there," Dunn said. The board is expected to make a decision on road next month after all the research is completed.
