Will Hwy. 74 South in PTC be widened soon or pushed back?

Plans to widen Ga. Highway 74 South in Peachtree City to four lanes any time soon have come into question.

Peachtree City Planning Commission Chairman Wes Saunders noted at Monday's meeting that the commission had based a number of its previous decisions on the widening occurring. But he thinks the project is so far off into the future that the commission shouldn't count on it happening soon.

"I'm not so sure we should do that anymore," Saunders said of counting on the road widening.

City Planner David Rast said he has heard of a local push to fast-track the project, with a possibility it could be put on the Atlanta Regional Commission's list of road projects for the following year. Rast added that he didn't know how the Fayette County Commission's recent decision not to run a regional bus system would factor into the decision on the Hwy. 74 widening.

Saunders pointed to the new Publix shopping center on Hwy. 74 South, saying he felt the road would certainly be widened by the time it came on line.

Rast said the status of the widening plans should be clearer within the next couple of weeks.
