Blue Bell honors teacher

To honor Lorraine Johnson as a finalist for 2003 Georgia Teacher of the Year, Blue Bell Ice Cream treated Arnall Middle School's seventh grade to an ice cream Friday.

Blue Bell representatives Mike Overton, also a Sharpsburg resident, and Brian Mixon stopped in on a Friday afternoon with ice cream treats for 300 seventh-grade students and teachers.

Johnson was also presented with a cooler full of a variety of Blue Bell flavors and a card of appreciation from the company's president.

"This is great ... we appreciate the company for this," said Charles Smith, Arnall principal.

"We just wanted to show our appreciation for Mrs. Johnson," said Overton, "and we thought the best way to do that was an ice cream party."

"We like doing this," said Overton.

"It's important to honor educators. Plus, teachers set the example for their students and this is a way to emphasize for students what their teacher has accomplished."

Johnson, a seventh-grade language arts teacher at Arnall, is one of five finalists for Georgia's 2003 Teacher of the Year, and is the twelfth Coweta County teacher to receive that honor or semi-finalist designation since 1986. This year's winner will be announced on April 26.
