Flag rally is tomorrow By JOHN
THOMPSON The war over Georgia's state flag comes to the steps of the Coweta County Courthouse in Newnan tomorrow. The Saturday rally to try and get the old state flag put on a referendum in November is headed up by Sharpsburg's Steve Wallace. Wallace appeared before the County Commission last week to get approval for the rally and sparked a spirited debate. The sharpest opposition came from Commissioner Robert Wood, who erupted when he heard the proposal. "I have a real issue with their brochure that states Confederate States of America. That doesn't even exist," he said. Wood added the old flag was created in 1956 as a measure to "snub their noses" at court decisions outlawing segregation. Commission Chairman Jim McGuffey pointed out the group has just as much right to rally as any other group. County attorney Mitch Powell agreed and said the county really did not have a right to stop the rally. The rally starts at 9 a.m.
