Tyrone to Pathway: No more commercial uses By JOHN THOMPSON
If Pathway Communities wants to develop a subdivision in Tyrone, they'll probably have to do it without any commercial element to it. That's the message the Tyrone Town Council sent Thursday night when they sent Pathway back to the drawing board for a new development proposal. The company wants to develop 63 acres at the intersection of Ga. Highway 74 and Dogwood Trail. Pathway's Jerry Peterson said he wants to build 43 single-family homes, along with duplexes and a small shopping center on the tract. The Tyrone Planning Commission had given approval to the project, but stated there could not be a convenience store or gas station on the site and the commercial tract had to have a single owner. But Peterson asked the Town Council Thursday to allow for two owners at the commercial site, since many business owners who could go on to the site would not necessarily have an interest in owning a different type business. He added the development would be developed as a single site, to make sure that everything looked similar. Peterson also asked for the council to consider allowing a convenience store at the site, because it would allow the residents of the proposed subdivision to get everyday items without getting into their car. But neighboring residents had a different view of the proposal. "It's not in my back yard, but I oppose the commercial development," said Eric Allen. Town manager Barry Amos said the commercial part of the project concerned him. "Traffic is already a problem on Dogwood and a convenience store does concern me," he said. The Town Council agreed with Amos. "I have no problem with the residential. I'm not in favor of anymore commercial," said Councilman Ronnie Cannon. The Town Council tabled a decision on the proposal until May 16 and asked Pathway to come back with a proposal that did not consider any commercial development.
