Revolutionary War veteran honored By CAROLYN
CARY
A Revolutionary War patriot, George Norwood, was honored at a grave-marking service conducted by the Piedmont Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution. The dedication service was held at the Antioch United Methodist Church in Fairburn. Antioch is one of the oldest churches in Fulton County, having been established in 1837. Norwood was born on March 24, 1760 and descended from ancestors who emigrated from Scotland to Surrey County, Va., in 1613. His father, William Norwood, served in the North Carolina Legislature. George Norwood enlisted in the Continental Army in 1780 when he was about 20 years old. He became a first sergeant in Williams North Carolina Militia. After the war, he moved to Georgia and is listed in the 1820 census in Morgan County. In 1833 he was listed as a pensioner living in Campbell County, which went into Fulton County in 1932. He is buried at the Antioch Church cemetery which was established by a son-in-law and died about 1840. Descendants Christopher Kimberly and Ansley Kimberly participated in the unveiling of the SAR marker and flag installation and Charlotte Whitaker presented the biography of her ancestor. The service was the 23rd Revolutionary War patriot grave marked by the Piedmont Chapter in the Atlanta area. Those who have information about unmarked Revolutionary War graves are asked to contact George Thurmond at 770-475-1463.
