Students selected for youth author competition

Some aspiring student writers' works have been selected to compete in the 2001-2002 Young Georgia Authors' Competition.

From a total of 59 entries received from schools throughout the county, the Fayette County School System has selected 10 to advance to the Georgia Department of Education for district and state judging.

Students in grades K-9 were encouraged to write and submit any type of original composition they desired including short stories, poetry, essays and personal narratives. Students were given the freedom to base their works on the topics of their choice. One finalist from each grade level was selected from the county to advance to the district and state competition levels.

The school system's finalists for this year's competition are Emily Smith, kindergarten, Oak Grove Elementary; Teylor Stayton, first, North Fayette Elementary; Meghan Pattison, second, Peeples Elementary; Meredith Edwards, third, Brooks Elementary; Kaitlyn Merrels, fourth, Fayetteville Intermediate; Abby Cisko, fifth, Kedron Elementary; Daniel Scott Nigro, sixth, J.C. Booth Middle; Melissa Ann Holzworth, seventh, Flat Rock Middle; Emily Boulton, eighth, Rising Starr Middle; and Brian Ingram, ninth, Starr's Mill High.

"We had a number of great entries submitted this year. We have many talented young authors in our schools who obviously have a passion for writing," says Reading Coordinator Debbie Wheat about the 2002 entries.

District winners will be announced along with the state winning entries later this year. State winners will be appear before the Georgia Board of Education during its regular meeting in September for recognition of excellence in language arts.
