Math Students Demonstrate Skill at Tournament

Fayette students virtually swept the Fayette County Invitational Math Tournament held at Sandy Creek High School.

A total of 67 students from Eagle's Landing, East Coweta, Fayette County, McIntosh, Newnan, Sandy Creek and Starr's Mill High Schools participated in the tournament on March 25. The competition was divided into two categories: varsity (above Algebra II) and junior varsity (Algebra II and below). Students in each group competed on an advanced level in both team and individual competitions.

"This tournament gives students who are interested in mathematics an opportunity to be together in an educational, competitive environment. Students can then take back to their schools questions that can be further explored and studied," says Kelley Wells, math teacher at Sandy Creek, about the tournament which is hosted annually by one of the county's high schools.

Winners from this year's tournament are (varsity individuals) Jon Straub, first place, Starr's Mill High School; Andrew Kerr, second place, Eagle's Landing High School; and Tony Hung, third place, McIntosh High School. The varsity teams of McIntosh and Starr's Mill High Schools took first and second place, respectively.

Junior varsity winners include Amanda Werner, first place, Starr's Mill High School; Soung Gi, second place, Fayette County High School; and Soung Park, third place, Fayette County High School. Placing first at the Junior varsity team level was Fayette County High School followed by Starr's Mill High School with a second place victory.
