Fludd enters Dist. 48 House race Virgil Fludd, a resident of north Fayette County, announced his candidacy for the Georgia House of Representatives last weekend at a reception/fundraiser in Fairburn. The first candidate to declare a bid, he is running for a seat in District 48, newly created in the controversial, two-year redistricting of several state House and Senate districts. "The newly formed District 48 is as diverse as they come racially, politically, economically. I believe I'm better equipped than many to see, understand and leverage that diversity," Fludd said as to why he is seeking the seat. If elected, Fludd, a Democrat, would represent the state's largest district in terms of population. Approved just last week after nearly two years of controversy, the new 48th District comprises the former District 53, south Atlanta/Camp Creek Parkway/College Park area; District 55, East Point; District 58, Union City, Fairburn, portions of District 52, Palmetto and unincorporated south Fulton; and a portion of District 104, the northern half of Fayette county that includes Fayetteville and Tyrone. It is bordered on the east by Hartsfield International Airport, on the west by Douglas County, on the north by south Atlanta and on the south by Fayetteville. "The big issues in District 48 education, managed growth/regional transportation and healthcare are not so unique. What makes them uniquely challenging for us, however, is the wide range of perspectives as a result of the diverse range of people here," said Fludd. Fludd's campaign platform addresses a number of key issues currently facing District 48, such as the GRTA transportation plan.
