Pfiffer vows to fight on in annexation dispute

Fayette County Commissioner Peter Pfeifer is not done in his efforts to get everybody in the county on the same page for annexation efforts.

Rebuffed by the Association of Fayette County Governments last week, Pfeifer has vowed to speak to residents about the problems he sees with annexation efforts.

"If people are concerned about annexation issues, they can make changes at the ballot box in November," he said.

The commissioner offered a resolution at last week's meeting to form a committee to discuss annexation issues.

The committee would have studied issues such as creating islands and strips; the effects of annexation on schools, traffic and planning; and annexations by municipalities not in the county.

Pfeifer said there can be negative aspects to annexation such as confusion for the public, regarding whether they live in the city or county.

As far as planning goes, Pfeifer said annexation can create problems for the school system.

"How can the school board plan placement of schools and school districts when their assumptions can change with no warning or coordination?" he said.

The commissioner wanted a committee to take an open, honest look at annexation issues, but did not receive the support of other members of the association.

Tyrone Councilman Ronnie Cannon doesn't believe the committee is necessary.

"It's nice of them to be concerned, but they're just trying to take control," he said.

Cannon said House Bill 489 already provides a way of mediating annexation disputes and he believes the process should stop there.

"We're going to do what's best for the people of Tyrone."
