Fairburn's new development features more than 200 homes

Fairburn officials gave final approval to another new development that will bring more than 200 homes and townhomes to the city, complete with townhomes and a commercial area.

The development is on 76.8 acres at the intersection of Ga. Highway 138 and Vickers Road and features 214 units.

Planned for the site are 102 single-family detached homes and 112 townhomes, along with 8.5 acres of commercial space and 20.87 acres left as open space.

But before the development was approved, the City Council made sure the developer understood the council's wishes.

Councilman Glenn Higgins emphasized that all homes on the exterior of the site near Vickers Road and Elders Road would be at least 1,800 square feet.

In the past, the developers have pledged to have architectural accents, such as brick or masonry, on the homes and said the townhomes would be fee simple, privately owned structures, instead of rental units.

Councilman Harvey Melear, who in rezoning hearings dubbed the development a "mill village," still was not happy the subdivision would be located in the center of a curve on Vickers Road.

"When the police chief says he has concerns, you should listen to that," said Melear.

But city planner Bill Johnston said the city's engineer had reviewed the plan and said the development featured a correct sight distance for the entrance to the subdivision.

Johnston also said the development features 25 percent greenspace, which can be counted towards the city's acquiring greenspace under Gov. Barnes' mandated plan.

The final plan passed the City Council's scrutiny, with only Melear opposing it.
