Speed table, signs may be added to Golf View Drive to improve traffic

Changes may be coming to Golf View Drive to slow down traffic at the request of residents there who have complained that high speeds and high vehicle volumes could lead to a serious accident.

City Engineer Troy Besseche is preparing several new elements for Golf View which will be proposed to the City Council at its meeting Thursday. Those elements include raised pavement markers to help guide motorists after dark and additional signs in the area.

Another possible element could be the addition of a speed table, Besseche confirmed. Speed tables are designed to cause vehicles to rise several inches off the ground on a flat surface for several feet in an attempt to slow down motorists.

In a letter to Golf View Drive residents, Mayor Steve Brown said police monitoring of traffic would be another part of the design. Brown said if council approves the design, it will be implemented "in a short period of time."

A number of Golf View residents complained about traffic in the area at the annual City Council retreat in March. Vehicles routinely leave the road, tearing down mailboxes and damaging landscaping, they said.

One man said his wife has had to jump out of the way of several vehicles while standing in their front yard.
