PTC Planning Commission OKs plan for new elementary school

A revised plan for the new elementary school in north Peachtree City off Crabapple Lane has been approved by the Planning Commission.

The new plan, approved at the commission's meeting Monday night, addresses buffering concerns along the western property line that separates the school site from a residence. By shifting the building and parking area east, it created more room to the west for landscaping such as an evergreen hedge and pine trees, said Mike Satterfield, facilities director for the Fayette County Board of Education.

The school, which will be located at the southwest corner of the intersection of Crabapple Lane and Ga. Highway 74, is expected to be ready by the 2003-2004 school year. Construction is set to begin in June.

Satterfield said the school will help alleviate overcrowding conditions at Kedron Elementary. The parking lot was created with extra room to "stack" vehicles as they wait to drop off and pick up children, he noted.

The building will look similar to Kedron Elementary School with a few extra classrooms added on.

School officials plan to add acceleration and deceleration lanes on Crabapple Lane to facilitate the extra traffic.

This will be the third and final elementary school built with funds from the bond issue that was approved by local voters.

The commission unanimously approved the plan after adding a requirement that any mechanical fixtures on the roof be screened if necessary.
