Three Coweta County student chosen for Governor's Honors Program

Three Coweta County students have been chosen to attend the prestigious Governor's Honors Program this summer.

From East Coweta High School, Elizabeth Brass will attend to study science and Michael Gotham will attend to study math, and Newnan High School student Gwendolyn Reid will attend to study voice (alto).

"It's a tremendous honor, and we congratulate these students," said Dr. Judy Robinson, assistant superintendent for curriculum for Coweta County Schools.

"Governor's Honors is a real learning opportunity for them to broaden their horizons during the summer. It's a chance to be in a rigorous academic environment with peers of similar ability, and everything is provided for them at no cost to their families. Plus, it's a lot of fun for students, and the program gives them their first real taste of college," said Robinson.

Held over six weeks every summer at Valdosta State University, the Governor's Honors Program (GHP) is a highly selective instructional program designed to provide intellectually gifted and artistically talented high school students challenging and enriching educational opportunities not usually available during the regular school year.

Activities are designed to provide each participant with opportunities to acquire the skills, knowledge and attitudes to become independent, life-long learners.

Rising juniors and seniors in Georgia's public and private high schools may be nominated by their teachers. A local panel of teachers nominates a limited number of students from each school district to attend GHP, and then teachers at the state level interview students to determine attendance in late January.

Major instructional areas taught at GHP include English, foreign languages, mathematics, science, socialstudies, visual art, theatre, music, dance, design, technology and executive management.

Instruction is also provided in four support areas computers, counseling, library/media and physical fitness.

Coweta County teacher Dale Lyles serves as the assistant administrator for instruction at GHP. He assists GHP teachers in designing their curriculum, and observes classes all summer to see that we are meeting our two mandated goals of differentiated instruction and lifelong empowerment.

"I congratulate these three Coweta County students for achieving one of the highest honors that Georgia's public schools has to offer," said Lyles.

"I know they will come away from GHP, as I do every summer, with their lives changed by this awesome experience. Selection to GHP means they have been selected by one of the nation's premiere gifted programs through a very tough process," said Lyles.
