Pre-k registration begins

Parents can register their children for voluntary pre-kindergarten classes in Coweta County schools beginning this week, at all 15 elementary schools in the county.

All Coweta County elementary schools are served by at least one pre-kindergarten class with the exception of Arbor Springs, Canongate,Eastside, Moreland, Newnan Crossing, Moreland and Ruth Hill, which each have two classes.

Parents in the new Willis Road Elementary School district should register children for pre-k classes at White Oak Elementary School on Lora Smith Road. A separate registration process has been established at that school since the Willis Road school is not yet ready for operation.

Maggie Brown School serves three Newnan-area schools with five classes.

Parents in the Atkinson, Elm Street and Jefferson Parkway Elementary School districts should register for pre-kindergarten classes at Maggie Brown, which is located on Kellogg Place in Newnan.

Because of high demand and a limited number of class slots available, a lottery will again be used to select students who will participate in Coweta County School System's pre-kindergarten classes for the school year 2002-2003.

Parents may register their four-year-old at the school in their attendance district Monday through Friday between the hours of 2:30-4 p.m. from now until April 26 and from 8-10 a.m. April 27.

Due to the demand, there are no transfers for pre-kindergarten. Names will be drawn at 10:30 a.m. April 27 at each elementary school with the exception of Willis Road, which will take place at White Oak Elementary. Maggie Brown will have the lottery drawing for students that are in the Atkinson, Elm Street and Jefferson Parkway districts.

Twenty names will be drawn for each class. Twins or triplets will be registered and drawn together unless it is for the 20th slot. In this case, if no other slot becomes available before school begins the parent or guardian must make a decision concerning the slot.

The remaining names will be drawn and placed on a waiting list in the order in which they are drawn. The principal or his/her designees in each school will draw the names in an open meeting area and the assistant principal or designated person will record the names and number the registration forms in the order in which they are drawn.

It is not necessary for parents to be present when names are drawn. The pre-kindergarten teacher will notify them by mail and/or on the phone.

Children who register after the April 27 drawing will be added to the waiting list in the order in which they register.

Students in the State Lottery pre-kindergarten must be four years of age on or before September 1, 2002.

A child eligible for kindergarten may not attend the pre-kindergarten program. Children must have a date of birth September 2, 1998 through September 1, 1999.

To attend the pre-kindergarten program, a child must have a Social Security card (or waiver); a birth certificate; hearing, vision, and dental certificate; and an immunization certificate. Hearing, vision and dental and the immunization certificate can be obtained at the Coweta County Health Department or from your pediatrician.

A birth certificate and proof of residency is required before the child can enter the lottery.

The school day for voluntary prekindergarten is from 8 a.m-2:30 p.m. and the calendar days are the same as the regular school calendar.

Pre-kindergarten students have access to the regular bus lines, breakfast, lunch, and the After School Program. If further information is needed, call the Office of Curriculum and Instruction at 770-254-2810.
