Homestead exemption increased

In an effort to further reduce the tax burden on property owners, the Coweta County Board of Commissioners asked that the 2002 state Legislature consider a bill that would provide for a referendum to increase the homestead exemption.

That request became HB 1646, which has now passed both the House and Senate. The bill must still be signed by the governor.

Introduced by the county's house delegation representatives John Yates, Lynn Smith, David Brown, and Lynn Westmoreland HB 1646 increases the homestead exemption from Coweta County ad valorem taxes to $10,000 of assessed value if approved by voters.

The increased homesteade xemption involves Coweta County ad valorem taxes only. It does not affect taxes imposed by the Coweta County Board of Education. The bill sets the referendum date for the November 2002 general election.

Commissioners had suggested the increase in homestead exemption during discussion of the special purpose local option sales tax in 2001. If approved by voters in November, homestead exemption on Coweta County ad valorem taxes would double.
