Science Olympiad is an international nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science by both students and teachers. These goals are accomplished through classroom activities, research, training workshops and the encouragement of intramural, district, regional, state and national tournaments.

The Science Olympiad tournaments are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of individual and team events which students prepare for during the year. The competitions follow the format of popular board games, TV shows and athletic games. These challenging and motivational events are well balanced between the various science disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers and technology.

Although Rising Starr is hoping to achieve its first national championship this year, team sponsor Marge Counts says that Science Olympiad is more than just a competition, it is a spring board to inspire students in their pursuit of a science career. Counts also adds that while students learn more about science, they are helping to improve the quality of life for everyone.

"Rising Starr is proud to represent the state of Georgia at the national competition. As we enter the new millennium, knowledge is more critical than ever before, and this team, striving to attain excellence, has a desire to make a difference in our future as well as their own," says Counts.

Rising Starr, along with Booth and McIntosh, will compete at the national competition May 17-18 at the University of Delaware.
