Dunn to run again

Fayette County Commission chairman Greg Dunn says he has decided to seek re-election this year.

He won't be alone on the ballot: Former Fayetteville Mayor Mike Wheat has said publicly he expects to run for one of the two slots up for grabs on the commission this year.

The other post is now held by Linda Wells. Wells is finishing up her second though nonconsecutive four-year term on the commission. Dunn is completing his first term.

Dunn made the announcement Saturday at the county's Republican breakfast and said one of the reasons he's running again is quality of life.

"I think we've got to fight for our quality of life and that's what we've done in the last few years," he said.

During his tenure, Dunn said, the number of housing permits and the amount of commercial development has declined sharply in the unincorporated county and he wants to continue that effort.

"We can't let the growth overwhelm our existing infrastructure," he said.

One of the accomplishments that Dunn says he is most proud of during his tenure is the agreement for a new jail and court facility.

"That idea languished for about 10 or 15 years and we were able to get it done," he said.

Another idea that got implemented during his tenure has been a long-term planning process for capital improvements.

While he has been pleased with the county's efforts at trying to preserve Fayette's high quality of life, Dunn realizes it's something that has to be monitored and watched constantly.

"I'm committed to that effort," he said.

Primaries will be in August, and the general election in November. All members of the commission currently are Republicans.
