When the red lights came to Fayette County By CAROLYN CARY
If you can remember when there were no traffic lights in Fayette County, then you were here before 1967. The first red light went up at the north intersections of Ga. highways 85 and 54 in Fayetteville in 1967. At that time Hwy. 54 was a two-way street down Lanier Avenue on the north side of the courthouse square. Currently there are 20 red lights in Fayetteville, and it is estimated that the amount of traffic coming and going beneath the hwys. 85-54 lights is about 60,000 in a 24-hour period. The first red light in Peachtree City was installed at the intersection of Ga. highways 54 and 74 about 1978-79. The second was at Hwy. 54 and Peachtree Parkway and came about two years later. Currently there are 18 stop lights in Peachtree City, and it is estimated that approximately 25,000 cars a day go under the light at hwys. 54 and 74. The Town of Tyrone has three stop lights, with the first one going up at Jenkins Road about 12 years ago. The red lights in unincorporated Fayette County are handled by the Georgia Department of Transportation, and there are 14 of them. The population at the time of the first red light was approximately 8,000. The population now is 93,000, with a total of 55 red lights.
